What happens during an eye exam?
When you have an eye exam, Dr. Gundersheimer uses a variety of tests and state-of-the-art technology to check your eye health and your vision.
Visual acuity
The visual acuity test measures the sharpness of your vision. You read letters and numbers in decreasing sizes from a projected eye chart.
Cover test
The cover test allows Dr. Gundersheimer to check the alignment of your eyes and how they work independently and together. You cover one eye and then the other, focusing on images that are far away as well as close up.
Ocular motility
The ocular motility test shows how well your eyes follow moving objects and your ability to shift your focus between different objects. Dr. Gundersheimer asks you to hold your head still and follow an object with your eyes so he can watch your eye movements.
Refraction
The refraction test allows Dr. Gundersheimer to refine your prescription for corrective lenses. You look through a machine while the doctor flips between lens options asking which option is more clear.
Slit lamp
Dr. Gundersheimer uses the slit lamp to examine the inside of your eye. He shines a light into your eye and looks through the slit lamp to look at your macula, retina, and optic nerve.
Glaucoma
The glaucoma test is the “puff of air” test that is used to measure the pressure in your eyeball. Also known as non-contact tonometry, this test is critical to diagnosing glaucoma before it affects your vision.
How often do I need an eye exam?
Adults and children who don’t wear corrective lenses should have an eye exam every two years. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you should have an annual appointment with Dr. Gundersheimer.
How are eye exams different for children?
Dr. Gundersheimer can adjust eye exams to allow for your child’s communications skills. In addition to the routine tests of a comprehensive eye exam, he also checks for developmental issues like a lazy eye. He also monitors for color blindness and depth perception.
